ST. GEORGE’S DAY
Batx 1(Sandra Pérez)
What
would you answer if someone asks you for the legend of St. George?
The origin
of the legend of St. Georges brings us back to the 3rd century in Turkey ,
where St. George was born. He was a roman military who rejected the order of
his Emperor to persecute Christian people. He was beheaded and he became an
important Saint in the eastern part of the Roman Empire .
By the 9th
century, his fame had widespread. It’s said that the trouble between St George
and the famous dragon happened in Libya .
In Catalonia , the legend
tells us that in Montblanc (Conca del Barberà) was living a terrible dragon who
was very hungry. Then the king had to give him a person to satisfy his
appetite.
One day,
luck draw to the king’s daughter. She would have died if St. George hadn’t
appeared and hadn’t fought with the dragon. He killed the dragon and legend says
that from the dragon’s blood a lot of roses were born.
Ever
since then, on this popular festive day, boys usually give roses to his
girlfriends and girls give books to her boyfriends.
Although
23rd April isn’t a public holiday, you can see floods of people on
the streets. It’s wonderful to walk while seeing some rose’s stalls!
On this
day, I think it’s very important to meet with family and friends, at least for
me because I haven’t got a boyfriend yet.
Every
year my dad gives my mother and I a white rose, and I hope receive it this
year.
There’s
nothing nicer than celebrating this romantic legend with your loved ones.
