What happened in 1788?
Captain Phillip discovered Australia. And when he did it he returned to England to tell the Queen. She said that he had to return and establish a British colony in Australia.
How many boats were there?
There were 11 boats with hundreds of people in each one.
What did the criminals do when they arrived in Australia?
They built roads, houses, schools and the prison
Many criminals died in the boats. Why did they die?
They died because the conditions weren’t good. They didn’t have good water, good and they fought one another.
Apart from the criminals who else was on the boats?
The police who had to take them to Australia. Also priests, ship workers, and the captain.
What kind of criminals went to Australia?
Robbers, thieves, killers, murderers, prostitutes… adults, women and children.
Why did the queen send criminals to Australia?
Because England was saturated with criminals.
